Prom Business 2012

I have officially claimed my rite of passage as an old a$$ mom with an almost grown daughter!  Saige had her Junior Prom this past Saturday and needless to say, I had stomach pains all day (it might have been that spicy chicken sandwich I ate at like 1130am, but my “woe is me” excuse sounds better).  Actually there were many factors that played into me acclaiming this rite of passage.  Let’s do a recap on the events of the day…

Prior to the weekend I did what all Prom mommies do which is get the dress steamed, buy shoes, order the boutonniere, work out hairstyles/make-up, make appts, etc.   The special circumstance that we had to incorporate was the fact that Saige had two games that day before Prom.  That makes timing for the day crucial…and let’s face it, my time management skills blow.  I have a ton of great skills, but time management is laying stagnant at a solid #80 out of 100 (I mean, if I had a list of my skills…in a journal, next to my bed…but really, who does that? Er…).

Back to the events, the boys and I (with a surprise visit from Uncle Alex and Camille) watched the games and as always I get super excited admiring “the beast” as she does her thing on the field. She is so talented and it keeps getting better.  They won both by the way and Saige even hit a home run (did I mention beastly yet?).  After the games it was go time…I needed to pick up the dress, grab the boutonniere, get back home, set out jewelry, coordinate with my girl Amee to come over..she did Saige’s twists in her hair and it looked amazing (thank you my friend), and throw in a last minute trip to the store.  And so you ask…where does is get cra cra??  The place where I took the dress to be steamed was a cleaner/tailor shop off base run my some random Turkish dudes…it was my first time using them since the one on base was going to take too long.  I prepaid, thankfully, earlier in the week and hopped on over there around 2:30pm after the games.  To my complete and utter disgust, what I stumbled upon not only made my stomach turn but it made me want to tackle somebody.  The blinds were drawn, the inviting and shiny neon OPEN sign was gray and shunning, the word on the door saying open daily til 8pm had a disclaimer…Saturdays, we open til 2pm!!!  I up-chucked slightly, starting slapping the glass like a mad woman, looked to my right and saw my worst fear become a reality…Saige standing there with her mouth dropped, despair in her eyes, and screaming “It says 2 o’clock, Mom….what is happening?”.  Immediately, the stark raving mad Diane sense left me and Warrior Mom Diane entered the building, literally .  There was no way I was going to let this ruin her day.  I barreled into the adjoining store and begged, pleaded, stood my ground, and made someone help me.  After searching and going through about 18 keys and a couple phone calls…we broke in that place!!  I walked right behind that Turkish guy’s counter and grabbed that dress like an intern for Vogue would do, flipped the key lady my dress tag receipt, and I was out of there in 7 seconds flat!!!  Most importantly, Saige’s confidence and trust in her mom remained…and that’s what it’s all about for us in parenting isn’t it??  Fast forward to the prom prep…Saige had gotten her hair shaved the night before and wanted stars etched in her hair in conjunction with the prom’s theme “Written in the Stars”, but the Germans are limited in hair art apparently (just another minor perk you stateside folk probably take for granted…LOL).  But we got pointed zig zags and then Amee came in and whipped out some side twists and Saige finished up with the curls…ever since I showed Saige a pic of her when she was two and I cut her bangs crooked, she forbids me to touch her hair…sigh, so touchy!  She chose a beautiful pair of blue gem earrings passed down from Maria’s collection (I love that she has the ability to incorporate a piece of her Gramdma into her growing up even though she is not here with us physically).  She wears a piece of her jewelry every single day…and it becomes a part of her daily life…from talking about it with her friends to remembering where she saw her wear it in the past.  I’m so glad she has those memories forever…

After the dress was on, I was standing there thinking how blessed I was to have such a healthy and happy daughter…and that she was embarking on yet another huge milestone in her life that I could be a part of.  My life really is grand…

A group of the kids met up for dinner at Milano’s and coincidentally, there a perfect picture spot right next door and so the photo ops began :)

Movie Park Fetish

First, let me preface this post by explaining the fetish reference…our family LOVES movies.  We each have a genre we favor…G and his raunchy comedies, Teage and his family oriented human/non-human mash-ups, Saige and her inspirational teen movies, me and my “based on a true story” flicks, and JD….well, truth be told I don’t think he would turn any movie down.  The past few weeks have been full for the Isla’s.  Don’t get me wrong, I love having a full life…whether it be easy peasy of difficult dilemma.  The fact remains, we are full of volunteering, working, coaching, playing, entertaining, crafting, writing, cleaning, gardening, freezing, carpooling, cooking, the occasional wine glass lifting, yada yada.  I decided to make a cut in the whirlwind we call life and plan an overnighter during the end of Spring Break to Movie Park (also known as Warner Brothers Park back in the day).  We had made a decision early on in the year that we would keep it close to home and if we went anywhere it would be local (we already have Milan and hopefully a mini trip to the states planned for the Summer)…and we all know leave days + dollas don’t grow on trees, right?  So I thought it would be nice to take the kids to an amusement park a mere 3 hours away. So much that has been going on recently has been about Saige (softball, upper-classman business, etc).  JD hasn’t had a play in a little while and Teage is turning a bit bored with school I think, being smarty has it’s downfalls I guess…so I thought it would be cool to focus in on something I knew the boys would fully enjoy (and let’s be real, Saige may be “old” but she knows a good time when she sees one).  We packed up and headed out a bit early in the day so we could peruse the local area of Oberhausen which is home to the CentrO Centre…it is the largest mall in Europe and really reminds me of the ones back home.  This is where we stumbled upon the Lego Store, a real Starbucks, a Foot Locker, and one of the only two GIlly Hicks stores in the world…it’s the “Cheeky Cousin of Abercrombie + Fitch” based out of Australia.  Everybody wins at CentrO!  We capped it off with dinner along the Promenade (also a fabulous good time, think Pleasure Island strip) at a German “mexican” eatery before we settled back at our European 4 star hotel. Ahhh….

Info on CentrO and the Promenade:

http://www.centro.de/english.html

The morning after, we arrived at the park early so that we could get the rides ‘in demand’ out of the way…and it was crucial…come later in the day it was almost like Disney death with the lines.  The place was kick a$$ and overall, it was a blast for each of us in our own way…when the first few months of 2012 seemed to be turning on me, it was the fetish that pulled it through!!  Moral of this story, find your fetish and SUCCUMB!

Waiting for the park gates to open...with serious intent

A Teen and a Hoodie

The events of last month when Trayvon Martin was gunned down in an area close to home for me has sparked a nationwide uproar from all walks of life.  I knew I wanted to post something about this tragedy a while back, I could not ever imagine how I could cope with losing one of my kids this way.  I waited until now because I felt like there was so much being said (and still is) that I was engaged in listening more than I was in speaking.

First off, I want to be clear…I obviously wasn’t there that fateful night of February 26th.  I don’t know exactly what “went down” between Zimmerman and Trayvon.  What I do know is there is no right way to explain a grown man gunning down an unarmed teenager in ANY, I mean ANY, situation.  Trayvon did not hold a firearm that night.  Speculation and eyewitness reports suggest that he physically attacked Zimmerman.  Is this man unable to “defend” himself in the same manner without deadly force if this was actually the situation at hand?  We all know or heard of teenagers that practice criminal behavior or are convicted juvenile delinquents.  They are the gang bangers and extremely violent teens that consistently utilize weapons upon weapons from their arsenal of deadly force.  These people are just as we call them, race unknown…as criminals. Criminals come in all colors, size, gender, and age.  I am speaking about Trayvon, not the criminals here, and the so called angsty teens who on average may be moody, expressive, bratty, or immature.  I have two teenagers, and they definitely flaunt these behaviors throughout their adolescence.  It is also known that some teens will “fight” to cope with a bad situation or to defend themselves.  So here’s the deal…if a teen gets angsty and puts his hands on another human being, that opens the door to shoot and kill?  Of course not.  In an argument or altercation, adults can’t just shoot each other, kids can’t shoot each other, and certainly adults can’t shoot kids either without expecting the consequences!  It’s called murder anyway you spin it.  This is where I think the main shock and awe stems from…that night Zimmerman walked back home and laid in his bed, a free man without question while Trayvon was wheeled away to the medical examiner’s office.

The debate concerning racial profiling is sad because the act of racial profiling 100% exists.  True here in this situation?…I would say most likely.  True in our nation?…you bet!  It is a shame and a travesty that people continue to discriminate with such forceable hate.  The irony is the public, in general, is the worst example for our people.  We talk about how wrong it is to hate and discriminate, but then we have reports, blogs, interviews, books, magazines, the Internet, and people telling us how we SHOULD in fact judge one another.  It’s everywhere…

The buck stops with us people.  If we don’t change our thoughts towards one another, we are responsible as well.  Trayvon didn’t need to die that night.  Taryvon didn’t need to be persecuted for his attire.  Trayvon is just like any other teen and adult in this world, worthy of a future.

I pray for justice.  I pray for our great nation…sigh.

To recap, a timeline of events for those not familiar with the Trayvon Martin case:

The slaying of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a Florida high school student who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, has captured national attention. Petitions calling for justice for Martin have exploded, amid allegations of racism and calls for more scrutiny…

Springing Forward

Ahhh, the sun and the warm tone of the weather suggests only one thing…Spring is Near!!  I have so many ideas and things ahead for Spring…mainly taking Fall/Winter and eliminating all the chaos and drabness that came with it this past year.  Pinterest has helped me keep the dream alive!  I have continued to do my one craft/project a week and to my surprise, I have really missed that creative aspect in me…and I miss having a Hobby Lobby nearby but who matters.  Some people are motivated when they go to the gym, or travel, or volunteer, or go to school, or work 8-5 jobs….I am truly motivated when creating awesome things!  Anything from food, to art, to photos, to gardens, to spaces, to gifts, to home creations….I love it all.  I used to spend so much more time doing these things….for whatever reason I’m not, it’s time to get back on track.  I’ve got three projects on the burner with several other mini-time fillers to keep me on track.  I can’t wait to share them with you guys!  Until then, think about what motivates you and be your most awesome self!  Don’t get complacent in your day to day…Spring Ahead!!!

My latest Pinterest creation...family birth maps <3

P.S. Bring it on Pinterest ;)

What about Mommy…?

My love and addiction for Pinterest has officially sent me over the edge with creativity, inspiration, and motivation to keep my crafty persona alive.  I am tackling at least one Pinterest idea/project a week.  (If you are just coming back from the Bermuda Triangle and have no idea what Pinterest is…check out my board, ask for an invite, and let the obsessive pinning of your future projects begin).

This week, I have a chosen an interview with my kids.  I found a really fun 21 Questions type of ask-n-answer covering what a child thinks about their mother.  It was super fun and pretty intriguing to see into the mind of what your child really thinks of you.  If anyone was going to put it all out there, it was going to be Teage,  Here is the breakdown of our sit down…lol.  I am also attaching the video clip we did together…so you really see how this unfolded.  He’s so funny.

Best of the Worst – 2011

I have been waiting and wanting to get this post out all month.  I have seen so many other people blog about the wrapping of 2011 (Best Moments, Best Songs, Best Travels, Best Movies, etc).  I clearly have a list for every one of those things and have no qualms about sharing them.  So, if you wanna know, just ask…because this 2011 wrap-up consists of the best of the worst when it comes to capturing the past year.  I take a ton of pics throughput the year…A TON!  I would say that 70% of them never even leave my external drive.  Mainly because editing and uploading in Germany BUGS the crap out of me….you fast Internet users in the states have no idea how good you really have it!  I had someone from the states ask me the other day if we had fiber optic connections here…ummm, go eff yourself, really…(that’s out of love I promise, I’m just jealous)!!  Another factor is that no one I know truthfully wants to sit and scroll through 178 pics of Saige warming up for a softball game.  I mean what’s not to like about watching her play?  However, I understand that you will just sit there and click your finger raw not really looking anyway, so I merely pick a handful…it evens the sanity out and saves you time (gah, I’m so thoughtful).  Point is, I have all the pics that slip through the cracks, that don’t make the cut, that I just royally screwed up on…and NOW is the time I wanna shove them in your face!  It’s my Best of the Worst Pics in 2011 and here’s the deal, some of my peeps need to listen up now….Disclaimer, I may or may not have taken some crazy pics with you in them.  I may or may not have said that I am keeping some of these pictures to myself.  I may or may not have fibbed about doing that.  Before you start texting me and hounding me about picture approval, in my defense, I have had a NUMBER of photos thrown out there that I did not approve, ones where I looked like a zombie, a drunk, certifiably insane, totally unhealed, and even like Karen Gravano (seriously, do I look like that?).  But, I shrug my shoulders and accept the fact that I am my worst critic…no one really sees me as all those things when my pics are put out there.  Some are actually funny as hell.  So, take a moment and enjoy the ride…and feel better knowing that I actually took these awful pictures…I need to step up my photography game!! (P.S. No editing was applied to these..they’re as raw as you can get)

This screams hilarity....in more ways than one

My husband gut punching my daughter?...disturbing, yes! (he was totally photo bombing me and faked her out...don't call CPS)

There are several things wrong here, the neon turban, the earpiece, the cropped legs...

When bad lighting, a camera phone, and last minute prep does a GREAT photo totally WRONG! Sigh...

hee hee hee...she's gonna be mad about it

Can they look any more pained?

Yes that's a toilet, yes he looks like he's peeing, and yes it looks like it's burning...we were on the 9th hole at an indoor mini golf course for crying out loud and he was grossed out by the props!!

Wait for it.... ;)

When a good fence line shot goes wrong because someone wants to be shy!

This is funny, the one golden egg and they both saw it at the same time...by the look on Teage's face, you can tell which one snatched first!

Awww, she was working it...he was working her ear instead!

Hand gestures in candid pics can say so much....

I have a feeling I could pretty much count three things that this face was probably meant for...I was there after all! HAHAHA

Secret Lovers, that's what we are...seriously, nobody can stage that closeness on a "love seat"!

I used this one because this is what half of my pics with Saige and her brothers looks like...her regulating something!!

Pretty sure you can limbo flat on the ground.

OK, so this one is crazy because my birthday boy is about to eat it...

This is one is crazy because these kids don't know a good time when it's given to them, geez lighten up and put on a smile...LOL

Alese, you make this shot, girl!

Mark watch out...JD is morphing!

GJ will save you!!

George and his photo bombing...it's a sickness!

hahaha, not sure what Jesse was doing...but he obviously didn't realize I was ready to snap!

This a typical shot of JD whenever we go somewhere he's not interested. I have about 100 of them...

Doh....

I also have about 100 pics of Camille, eyes closed!

Ahem, Harley that is inappropriate!

This is beyond hilarious....and totally came out looking worse than it was. I can't stop laughing...

This is just wrong...the strangling...the man hand forcing them into angst-ville!

Self portraits are just funny....

I'm mad about it...the setting on the camera was shifted accidentally and I had one shot of JD crossing the stage to get his honor roll award...this is now our memory!

She didn't see me looking until right when I snapped...these kids! hee hee

This is the one picture I didn't take....but it's only fair, when a 4 year old slow dances and grabs your butt....priceless!

This would have been a good one...sigh

I also have about 100 of these types of shots of Teage...he always gives me something to work for!

Worst pic of 2011!! Hands down...blech!!!

Whew…that was a good laugh! Thanks for looking…

Love ya,

Di

14 and Fantastic!

My JD turned 14 over the past weekend and it reminded me just how fast he has gone  from being my Baby Jorge to being Thespian JD. I can remember it like it was yesterday…the chubby fingers, the saucer eyes, the smile that melted your heart (and still does), how he fit just perfectly in my laundry basket up and down  those flights of stairs, the look on his face when his sister would manhandle him, watching him play in the snow for the first time, the thousands of Pooh heads drawn all over my wall with permanent marker,  the beginning of the cheeseburger obsession, seeing the gleam in his eyes when he first picked up a Lego, riding a bike on the first try, seeing the passion during his first ever performance, clapping for award after award in not only academics but equally important his citizenship towards others, understanding the charm he really had on the females, getting weirded out by the birth of his peach fuzz mustache, the “awkward” first time I had to explain why shutting his bedroom door is such a major factor, and the astounding genuineness and respect he has accepted as part of his personality.  I am beyond words at how lucky I am to be his mom.   He makes me smile everyday.  I am fulfilled in knowing that as each year passes, his journey continues on…allowing him to shine.

Take the walk with me…all of the above really is true :)

The eyes...

The smile...

The chubby fingers...that sometimes made their way into the ear

The manhandling...

The writings on the wall...

The cheeseburger fascination...

The Legos...

The role of big bro...

The master of two wheels...

The girls...

The awards...

The acting bug...

The 'stache...can you see it?

He truly is a gift…Happy Birthday to our J-dle D-dle, aka Baby Jorge, aka JD, aka my buddy!!
